Chapter Nineteen

Damien

The Malibu mansion was set up so that the last room was still connected to the main family room and dining area which led right into the kitchen – giving the entire communal part of the house excellent views of the ocean thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glass on the west wall.

Kira led Damien through the open floor plan and past a cozy couch to a spacious sitting room. There were books and various sundries on the shelves, and two circular coffee tables with a carved chessboard on each. Loveseats and armchairs filled the room instead of one large couch.

So many secrets hidden in these walls. Damien couldn’t wait to peel the wallpaper off and see what was written underneath. Maybe then he would feel a bit more relaxed about this new arrangement.

Kira waved her hand at one of the leather armchairs for him to sit and then went to the shelf to grab a mother-of-pearl inlaid box. “We don’t keep much alcohol in the house, but I have a stash of vodka around if you’re interested.”

“Drinking isn’t the way I choose to unwind or relax.” Damien sat in the armchair and leaned back, crossing one leg at the ankle over the opposite knee.

Kira gracefully sat down on the loveseat across from him, setting the box on her lap.

Damien wasn’t sure what she wanted to talk to him about, but he figured it had something to do with the way he’d been avoiding her ever since that fateful day.

The idea that someone could track him down just like they had before and figure out who he was staying with worried him, but they’d all insisted that couldn’t happen.

Kira had promised Cain would make sure nothing and no one would discover their connection until they were ready. He believed Adam was up to the task, but it still felt like an unnecessary risk.

The alternative was worse though.

Adam and Kira would not stay at any of his residences until Cain could ensure it was safe and secure, which apparently required a lot of remodeling. There had been a few emails with progress reports, but the process was time consuming.

None of this had anything to do with why he was avoiding her though.

Damien made sure he left before the sun was up and then didn’t usually return until sometime around midnight if he knew he couldn’t make it back by dinner.

Every day at eight, Adam had dinner on the table.

That was another problem he hadn’t found a solution to either.

Kira opened the box and picked out two pieces, putting her hands behind her back. Then she stuck out her fists for him to choose between.

All this avoidance because of her.

Damien couldn’t help but admire her any time they were in the same room together. She didn’t wear a stitch of makeup at the moment and still Kira was the most gorgeous creature he’d ever seen.

The scar on her face was starker without makeup to hide its brutal path across her face. It was clearly old, but still had a bit of purple which meant whatever had happened had been bad.
